MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for east Uttar Pradesh for Saturday and Bihar till Sunday amid forecasts of heavy to very heavy rainfall in these states. From Monday, very heavy rainfall is likely to subside to heavy rainfall in the subsequent days, IMD said.
Meanwhile, rainfall activity is expected to remain subdued over the plains of northwest, west-central, and south peninsular India for the next six to seven days due to the absence of any active weather systems over and above these regions, the weather department said.
During the next 6 days, very heavy rainfall is forecast only over east Uttar Pradesh on Saturday in northwest India. However, 'heavy' rainfall is expected over Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, and Punjab till Sunday. Similar rainfall activities are likely over Himachal Pradesh till Tuesday, east Uttar Pradesh till Wednesday, and Uttarakhand till Friday.
In east India, 'very heavy' rainfall is likely over Bihar, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim till Sunday, which is expected to subside over the next few days. 'Heavy' rainfall is expected over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on Monday and Tuesday, and over Bihar from Monday to Wednesday, IMD said. Heavy showers are also expected over Jharkhand from Sunday to Tuesday,
In northeast India, heavy to very heavy rainfall with 'extremely heavy' rainfall is likely over Meghalaya on Saturday, and very heavy rainfall over Assam and Meghalaya till Sunday. The department has forecast thunderstorms as well as lightning over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura till Wednesday.
In central India, 'heavy' rainfall is forecast only over Chhattisgarh from Saturday to Wednesday, and east Madhya Pradesh from Tuesday to Friday. IMD does not expect any 'very heavy' rainfall over the region in the coming days.
IMD has not forecast 'heavy' or 'very heavy' rainfall over west India and south India in the coming days. These regions might only receive scattered to fairly widespread rainfall, it added. End
