MUMBAI – In view of the uncertain monsoon situation, rating agency Crisil has developed a methodology to measure the vulnerability of crops and regions to rainfall deficiency. Named the Crisil Deficient Rainfall Impact Parameter, or DRIP, the indicator currently suggests significant stress in Karnataka, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana with milder stress in Haryana, it said in a release.

 

The current DRIP scores pertain to situation as of Jul. 8.

 

"The indicator highlights pressure across most crops, with the notable exceptions of well-irrigated sugarcane and relatively resilient groundnut and soybean. Stress levels are highest for tur and coarse cereals," the release said. Bajra, maize and rice have lesser degree of stress.

 

DRIP, an indicator the agency tracked for nearly 25 years, measures the vulnerability of crops and states to rainfall deficiency while accounting for irrigation availability, it said. The rating agency claimed that by incorporating irrigation coverage alongside rainfall deficiency, DRIP provides a more accurate assessment of agricultural stress on the ground.

 

The higher the Crisil DRIP score, the greater is the adverse impact of rainfall deficiency and the associated risks to agricultural output, it explained. 

 

Noting that rains in July have brought a welcome reprieve after an arid June, easing some of the immediate anxieties surrounding the progress of the Southwest monsoon, Crisil said the outlook remains far from clear as the India Meteorological Department has forecast July rainfall at 6?low the long-period average.

 

"Given the abundant precipitation recorded so far this month, this forecast implies that the latter half of July could turn considerably drier. As a result, the monsoon's trajectory remains delicately poised," it pointed out, rationalising the need for DRIP.  End
