NEW DELHI – In a dramatic turn of events, a litigant on Friday abused Chief Justice of India Surya Kant inside the courtroom and threw papers into the air, prompting security personnel to escort him out. The bench of Justices K.V. Viswanathan and Alok Aradhe observed that the petitioner Prabal Pratap, instead of presenting the case, made "incoherent and unparliamentary utterances". However, the apex court refused to take any action against Pratap, considering his condition. 

 

Addressing the judges as "judicial servants", Pratap said he was ordering them to register a first information report against an assistant commissioner of police in Vikas Nagar, Lucknow, for allegedly running a cybercrime syndicate. Justice Viswanathan asked, "You are ordering me? You are ordering us?" The petitioner then began abusing the Chief Justice of India and threw papers into the air, disrupting the hearing. Security personnel intervened immediately and escorted him out of the courtroom. Pratap was briefly detained by the police on the court premises.

 

Despite the incident, the apex court ruled on the merits of Pratap's case. "As far as the merit of this case is concerned, we have perused the records and we find no good ground to interfere with the impugned judgment (of Allahabad High Court)," said the apex court. "The Special Leave Petition is, accordingly, dismissed. All pending applications, including applications for permission to appear and argue in person and permission to file petitions, shall also stand disposed of," the top court said.

 

Last year, Rakesh Kishore, a 71-year-old advocate, threw a shoe at then Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai. Kishore was unhappy with Chief Justice Gavai's remarks during a hearing on a plea seeking restoration of a Lord Vishnu idol at the Khajuraho Temple complex in Madhya Pradesh.  End
