MUMBAI – Futures contracts of most spices on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange closed lower on Friday. Turmeric contracts rose more amid sustained demand at prevailing rates, while jeera fell amid higher arrivals and tepid bulk purchases.

The most active August contract of CORIANDER closed 0.3% lower at INR 15,486 per 100 kilograms, as buying interest weakened at higher price levels. The contract had hit a record high of INR 16,188 earlier in the week amid declining arrivals and firm industrial demand for the spice. "Despite the possibility of some near-term corrective weakness, coriander prices are expected to remain steady to firm," SMC Investments and Advisors Ltd. said in a note. The brokerage expects prices to fluctuate between INR 15,280 and INR 15,720.

The most active August contract of JEERA was down 1% at INR 20,500 per 100 kg, pressured by higher arrivals and a slowdown in fresh industrial demand. "Data showed mandi arrivals across major mandis jumped 96% week-on-week to 7,505 tonnes," SMC said. However, premium-quality arrivals continue to be tight and are likely to support prices. "Although overall physical supplies remain adequate, the availability of export-grade, high-purity seeds has declined faster than expected," Kedia said.

The most active August contract of TURMERIC was up 3.5% at INR 19,036 per 100 kg, extending gains to the sixth session. The contract has been gaining due to fresh buying interest at lower price levels. Turmeric prices rebounded sharply, driven mainly by short covering after recent declines, Kedia Stocks & Commodities Research said. "Earlier weakness was linked to improved monsoon rainfall, which eased concerns over the upcoming crop and encouraged expectations of better production prospects," it added.
