MUMBAI – Prices of soybean fell in key markets in Gujarat Friday due to higher arrivals while those in Rajasthan were steady due to the lack of fresh cues, traders said. Groundnut prices rose because the quality of arrivals in the market improved, traders said. Mustard prices rose because of lower arrivals, they said.

SOYBEAN prices in Gondal in Gujarat fell to INR 6,500-INR 7,300 per 100 kilograms from INR 6,800-INR 7,500 per kg Thursday, local trader Ashok Virvani said, as stockists were selling at the higher level to book profits. Arrivals of the oilseed in the market were 10,600 kg, up from 7,600 kg Thursday, Virvani said.

In Kota, Rajasthan, prices were steady from Thursday at INR 7,000 per 100 kg due to lack of fresh cues. Arrivals were also steady at 8,000 bags (1 bag = 40 kg), Mahesh Sameriya, a local trader, said. So far, the area under soybean in the current kharif season is down 40% on year at 4.78 million hectares, according to data from the agriculture ministry.

GROUNDNUT prices in Gondal rose to INR 5,700-INR 7,000 per 100 kg from INR 5,500-INR 6,700 per 100 kg Thursday, Virvani said. Arrivals were at 6,050 kg, up from 3,180 kg Thursday, he said. Although arrivals rose Friday, prices also increased as the quality of the seed improved after the rains stopped, traders said. They do not see a major risk to the groundnut crop due to low rainfall in the kharif season, as the crop doesn't require as much water as some other kharif crops.

MUSTARD seed prices in Kota were up INR 200 at INR 7,800 per 100 kg because arrivals fell to 10,000 bags from 14,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) Thursday, Sameriya said. Although arrivals fell on a daily basis, these were the same number of arrivals seen Wednesday and earlier this week, traders said. "It fell but still at normal level, no reason for this," Sameriya said.
