MUMBAI – Market participants retained their buying interest for a second day on Friday despite continued escalation of the conflict in West Asia as they found solace in lower crude oil prices and improved foreign investment flows. Though the domestic headline indices ended the week marginally down, they rose significantly in the week's final trading session. The Nifty 50 index closed above 24000 points after having failed to do so the past two sessions.

According to a CNBC report, US President Donald Trump Wednesday said he does not know whether Washington and Iran are returning to a full-fledged war, but he told reporters that Iran "badly" wants to make a deal to cease escalating hostilities in West Asia. He added that Iran had called to make a deal with the US after a series of American strikes.

Crude oil prices remained at lower levels, with the September futures contract of Brent Crude on the Intercontinental Exchange down 0.6% at $75.84 a barrel at 1458 IST. Crude oil prices were up 4% from their pre-war levels. "Globally, easing oil prices and a recovery in the technology sector have further improved sentiment toward India, supporting a rebound in FII (foreign institutional investor) inflows," Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, said in a note.

Friday, the Nifty 50 ended 1% higher at 24206.90, up 244.10 points. The BSE Sensex closed 1.1% higher at 77569.39, up 827.57 points. Only 10 constituents of the Nifty 50 ended in the red. India VIX, the market's fear gauge, fell over 8% to 12.2525 points.

All the broader market indices outperformed the benchmark indices in the session, ending 1.2-1.6% higher. Barring the Nifty FMCG, all sectoral indices were also up. The Nifty Realty and Nifty PSU Bank were the biggest gainers, up over 3?ch. The Nifty IT was also among the top gainers among sectoral indices, up almost 2%.

Jio Financial Services ended as the biggest gainer in the Nifty 50 index, up almost 4%. HDFC Life Insurance Co., SBI Life Insurance Co., Axis Bank, and Bajaj Finance were the other top performers in the index, up 1.9-2.8%. A rise of over 2% in index heavyweight Reliance Industries boosted the Nifty 50.

Shares of Adani Group companies also rose after Bloomberg Friday reported that Helios Capital Management had bought 770,000 shares of Adani Enterprises in the second quarter across three of its funds, two of which are first-time buyers of the stock. The Adani Enterprises stock recorded the third-biggest rise in the index, ending 2.4% higher. Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone rose over 1.5%.

All constituents of the Nifty IT index rose, with LTM being the top gainer, up nearly 5%. Shares of IT companies rose after IT giant Tata Consultancy Services detailed its June quarter earnings Thursday after market hours. The rise in the IT major's artificial intelligence revenue for the quarter boosted sentiment for its peers. Tech Mahindra, Infosys, Wipro, HCL Technologies, and TCS, all Nifty 50 constituents, were up 1-2%. Coforge, Mphasis, Oracle Financial Services Software, and Persistent Systems were up 2.4-4.6%.

Indian Bank was the top gainer in the Nifty 200 index, up almost 10% after the bank detailed its June quarter results. A rise in total income helped Indian Bank return to double-digit profit growth after two quarters of decline. The bank posted a net profit of INR 32.73 billion, slightly higher than INR 29.73 billion in the year-ago quarter.

Kalyan Jewellers India was the next big gainer in the Nifty 200 index, ending over 7% higher. The stock extended its rise for the third session. It has risen 34% in this period. One 97 Communications was up over 6%.

In the Nifty 500, Godrej Industries was the top gainer, up over 16%. Jammu & Kashmir Bank rose over 14%. Zensar Technologies rose nearly 14%.

Among the losers in the Nifty 50, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories was the biggest drag on the index, falling over 1%. The shares fell after some brokerages lowered their target price on the stock because of issues associated with its semaglutide supply. Most brokerages turned bearish on the stock after the company said it expects to resume commercial supplies of its semaglutide injections by late October or early November, after resolving an active pharmaceutical ingredient-related quality issue that delayed its shipments. Eternal was the second-biggest loser in the index, down almost 1%.

While Page Industries, down 3%, was the top loser in the Nifty 200, Schneider Electric Infrastructure shed almost 5% to be the biggest drag on the Nifty 500.
