MUMBAI – Prices of pulses were steady in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Chana prices are expected to rise in August due to higher consumption during the festival season, they said. The movement in tur prices is likely to depend on the progress of kharif sowing, though a lower acreage is unlikely to prompt a sharp decline amid the availability of government stocks and imports, they said. Masur prices are also likely to be range-bound in the near term amid ample imports, they said.

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,050-INR 6,100 per 100 kilograms, said Raja Jain, a local trader. Prices were unchanged as low demand was in line with low supply of chana, he said. "There is no movement in the market, there is neither enough demand nor supply to move prices right now," he said. Most need-based demand for chana from millers and traders is being met by the government's sale of its stocks, he said. Central nodal agencies have been offloading chana stocks across many states in the past few weeks, he said.

Prices could rise by INR 100-INR 200 per 100 kg in August due to higher demand during the festival season, Jain said. The consumption of chana dal, or processed chana, and besan, or chana flour, typically rises during the festival season. The availability of the government's stocks and Australian imports is likely to prevent a further rise in prices during that period, he said.

Prices of chana in Delhi were steady at INR 5,925-INR 5,950 per 100 kg.

TUR prices in Akola, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 8,000-INR 8,025 per 100 kg, said Ashok Gupta, a local trader. Prices were unchanged as demand remained weak amid steady arrivals, he said. Though arrivals have declined from the previous month, they are still higher for this time of the year, he said. "Arrivals haven't stopped at all. By this time of the year, arrivals are down significantly, but we had a good crop last year," he said.

Sowing of tur begun in Maharashtra in the last few days after being delayed by nearly 15–20 days due to deficient rainfall, Gupta said. Tur sowing is likely to speed up in the coming days, and is likely to be completed within the sowing window for the crop, which runs till mid-to-end July, he said. "Even if tur acreage remains low, there is plenty of supply available, which will keep prices from rising too much," he said. The government's stocks of chana and the availability of tur imports are likely to keep prices in check, he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhuya Pradesh, were steady at INR 8,150-INR 8,250 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 5,900-INR 5,950 per 100 kg, Jain said. Prices are likely to remain range-bound in the near term as the market does not expect any spike in demand, he said. Arrivals of the rabi crop are negligible, but the availability of the government's stocks and imports is keeping supply comfortable, he said. Most large buyers, including snack-makers, prefer imported masur as it is cheaper, he said.

Prices of the moti variety of masur in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,000-INR 6,300 per 100 kg, according to the association.  End
