MUMBAI – Prices of wheat showed mixed trend, while those of maize and rice were unchanged in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Wheat prices rose in Indore, supported by a slight rise in demand and fall in arrivals, they said. The movement in maize and rice prices is likely to depend on the progress of acreage in the ongoing kharif season, they said.

Prices of WHEAT in Indore rose by INR 10 per 100 kilograms to INR 2,730 per 100 kg Friday, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices have been fluctuating by INR 5–INR 10 per 100 kg in the past few days due to the slight fluctuations in demand and supply, he said. Though demand has largely been steady, a slight rise in need-based purchases by millers and traders is supporting prices.

While arrivals have declined in the past few weeks as farmers are sowing kharif crops, a marginal rise or fall of the same also impacts prices, Kochar said. Some farmers could bring more of their stock to the market to make quick cash for taking care of immediate expenses related to kharif sowing, while other days some farmers do not step into the market as they are too busy sowing, he said.

Prices of wheat are likely to fall once kharif sowing wraps up across the country, as arrivals are expected to rise again by then, said Dinesh Mangal, a local trader in Indore. "Farmers will be done by kharif sowing in another month or so, after which they will start bringing their stocks to the market again. The government's open-market sales of wheat will also begin by then, so prices will definitely fall," he said. Mangal expects prices of wheat to rise only before Diwali, which is in November. "There could be a chance for a rise in wheat prices due to higher demand for Diwali," he said.

Prices of wheat in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, were steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader. Prices of wheat are likely to fall by INR 50 per 100 kg next week when market activity begins in full swing, he said. The Navi Mumbai market has seen lower footfall this week due to the intense showers which lashed Mumbai and its suburbs in the first half of the week.

The price of MAIZE in Indore were steady at INR 2,365 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices were unchanged amid limited demand and supply of the coarse grain, he said. Arrivals of the summer maize crop have declined significantly, while demand remains limited to need-based purchases, he said. The market will take more cues from the progress of kharif maize sowing, which could remain lower than last year, he said. As of Jul. 3, the area sown under maize fell to 3.29 million hectares from 3.50 million hectares last year, data from the agriculture ministry showed.

Prices of maize in Davanagere, Karnataka, were steady at INR 1,800-INR 2,050 per 100 kg, Shiva Kumar, a local trader, said. Arrivals were steady at 800 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said.

Prices of RICE varieties were steady in Vashi, Vora said. Prices of the 1409 and 1509 varieties of basmati rice were steady at INR 9,600-INR 9,700 per 100 kg and INR 8,200-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, respectively, he said. Prices of the 1121 variety of basmati rice were also steady at INR 10,000–INR 10,200 per 100 kg, he said. Prices were unchanged amid low market activity, he said. Prices could rise in the near term due to fears of lower acreage and production in the ongoing kharif season. While the shortfall in acreage so far could be made up in the near term, forecasts of below-normal rainfall for the rest of the monsoon could impact the yield of the crop, bringing output of kharif rice down, he said.  End
