MUMBAI – Rainfall activity is expected to be subdued over most parts of the central and the south peninsular India for the next six to seven days due to the absence of any active weather systems over and above these regions, the India Meteorological Department said. Rainfall activity is likely to be below normal over the country--particularly over the Indo-Gangetic Plains, south India, and northeastern States--till Jul. 15, the weather department said.
The monsoon trough covered the entire country on Thursday, a day after the normal date of Jul. 8, with a rainfall deficit of 14% so far in the season. During Jun. 1–Jul. 9, the country recorded 205 mm of rainfall, 14% below the normal of 239.1 mm for the period.
The monsoon trough lies to the northwest of the country, while a trough in the westerlies lies over the eastern parts of the country. Two upper air cyclonic circulations lie over Assam and a western disturbance acting as a cyclonic circulation lies over north Pakistan and Punjab, the department said. The well-marked low pressure lying over Uttar Pradesh is expected to weaken in the next 24 hours.
Under the influence of these weather systems, very heavy rainfall is expected over parts of east Uttar Pradesh till Saturday, while heavy showers are likely to continue over most parts of northwest India till Thursday, the weather bureau said. In east India, very heavy rainfall is likely over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim till Sunday and over Bihar till Saturday, the bureau said. Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over several parts of east India till Thursday.
Very heavy showers are also expected over parts of Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura till Saturday, while heavy showers are expected to persist over multiple parts of northeast India till Thursday, the bureau said.
Heavy rainfall is likely over parts of east Madhya Pradesh from Tuesday to Thursday, and over Chhattisgarh from Monday to Thursday, the weather department said. Light to moderate showers are expected over most parts of central India till Thursday. Similar weather is expected over west India during the same period, the department said.
Strong surface winds are expected over the western parts of south peninsula India till Saturday, and over the eastern parts of the region till Tuesday, the weather bureau said. Light to moderate showers with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely over south peninsula India till Thursday, the bureau said. End
