MUMBAI – The area covered under kharif crops in Andhra Pradesh progressed to 669,800 hectares as of Wednesday, up more than 39% from 481,000 hectares covered in the corresponding period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The normal acreage for the season in the state is 3.08 million hectares, of which nearly 22% has been covered so far.

 

The acreage under paddy was up at 220,000 hectares from 178,000 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area sown under maize rose to 40,700 hectares from 35,000 hectares a year ago.

 

The area sown under tur so far was 70,400 hectares, up from 26,000 hectares last year, according to the report. Urad acreage climbed to 8,900 hectares from 8,000 hectares a year ago, and that of moong rose to 2,300 hectares from 1,000 hectares a year ago. The total acreage under all pulses was up at 81,700 hectares from 35,000 hectares last year.

 

The total area sown under all oilseed in the state rose to 65,800 hectares from 55,000 hectares covered in the previous year, the report showed. Groundnut acreage was up at 47,800 hectares from 43,000 hectares last year, and that of soybean was 5,500 hectares, up from 2,000 hectares a year ago.

 

Cotton acreage in the state was up at 240,100 hectares from 163,000 hectares a year ago, the report showed. Sugarcane acreage also rose to 9,500 hectares from 6,000 hectares last year.

 

Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the Southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. During Jun. 1–Jul. 9, Andhra Pradesh recorded 105.7 millimetres of rainfall, 17?low the normal for the period, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. The monsoon trough advanced over Andhra Pradesh on Jun. 6, and covered the entire state by Jun. 12. The absence of a weather system over the eastern parts of the southern peninsula, along with the weakness of the monsoon trough over the region has kept rainfall below normal over Andhra Pradesh.

 

As of Friday, water levels in reservoirs across Andhra Pradesh were at 37.3% of their live storage capacity, down from 50% a year ago, data from the state's water resources department showed.  End
