MUMBAI – Kharif crop sowing in Telangana reached 5.53 million acres (1 acre = 0.4 hectares) as of Wednesday, up more than 6% from 5.20 million acres covered in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Of the state's normal acreage for the season, which is 13.24 million acres, nearly 42% has been covered so far.

 

The area sown under paddy was up 422,340 acres from 363,562 acres a year ago, the report showed. The acreage under maize fell to 284,273 acres from 497,179 acres, and that of bajra was also down at 14,405 acres from 26,682 acres a year ago.

 

Tur acreage in the state rose to 319,373 acres from 311,269 acres last year, according to the report. The area sown under moong was 35,767 acres, up from 30,960 acres a year ago, and that under urad also increased to 10,696 acres from 9,063 acres last year. The total area sown under pulses was up 366,767 acres from 351,525 acres a year ago.

 

The total acreage under all oilseeds so far was 338,254 acres, up from 275,604 acres last year, the report showed. Soybean acreage rose to 334,539 acres from 274,876 acres a year ago, and that of groundnut was also up at 2,533 acres from 528 acres last year.

 

Cotton acreage in the state was up at 3.94 million acres from 3.46 million acres a year ago, while that under sugarcane also rose to 35,919 acres from 950 acres last year. 

 

The Southwest monsoon hit Telangana on Jun. 8, 15 days after the normal onset date, and covered the entire state by Jun. 23. In June, rainfall in the state was 125 below normal at 115 millimetres, which resulted in lower-than-expected acreage of various crops during that month. However, the intensity of monsoon picked up during July, with many rain-deficient districts in the state recording normal rainfall. As such, kharif acreage has risen slightly from the previous year.

 

During Jun. 1–Jul. 9, Telangana recorded 156 millimetres of rainfall, 16?low the normal for the period, data from the India Meteorological Department said. The water level in reservoirs across Telangana was 333.44 thousand million cubic metres as of Wednesday, compared with 522.31 thousand million cubic metres a year ago, according to the report.  End
