MUMBAI – Prices of soybean rose Thursday as arrivals declined across key markets in the country, traders said. Mustard prices were down because arrivals rose as farmers cleared stocks of the rabi crop to make space for the upcoming kharif output, traders said. Groundnut prices remained steady from the previous day due to lack of fresh cues, they said.
SOYBEAN prices in Kota in Rajasthan rose INR 119 to INR 7,000 per 100 kilograms and those in Gujarat's Ratlam market rose slightly to INR 7,500 per 100 kg, traders said. Arrivals in Kota were steady from the previous day at 8,000 bags (1 bag = 40 kg) but the seed quality was better on Thursday, Mahesh Sameriya, a local trader, said. Soybean prices in Gondal in Gujarat rose to INR 6,800-INR 7,500 per kg from INR 6,000-INR 6,900 per 100 kg, local trader Ashok Virvani said.
In Ratlam, arrivals of soybean fell by 200 quintals to 2,400 quintals (1 quintal = 100 kg) as some stockists were holding stock for prices to rise, said local trader Narendra Porwal. "Monsoon is also not good (below normal rainfall) and farmers are also buying seed for sowing purpose, which is why prices rose," Porwal said. So far, the area under soybean in the ongoing kharif season is down 40% on year at 4.78 million, according to data from the agriculture ministry.
Although soybean acreage is down on year, traders said it is likely to improve by the end of July as most farmers who shifted to maize last year have shifted back to the soybean crop due to better returns.
MUSTARD seed prices in Kota were down INR 200 at INR 7,601 per 100 kg because arrivals rose to 14,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) from 8,000 bags the previous day, Sameriya said. He said arrivals of the oilseed rose as farmers were selling mustard seed to make space for the storage of kharif crops.
GROUNDNUT prices in Gondal were steady from the previous day at INR 5,500-INR 6,700 per 100 kg, Virvani said. Arrivals were at 3,180 kg Thursday, down from 3,230 kg Wednesday, he said.
