MUMBAI – Prices of wheat and maize showed mixed trends while prices of rice were unchanged in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Wheat prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, fell owing to poor market sentiment amid limited demand and ample supply, they said. Maize prices rose marginally in Indore on concern about kharif production, they said. The movement of rice prices in the near term is likely to depend on the progress of kharif sowing, they said.

 

Prices of WHEAT in Indore fell by INR 10 per 100 kilograms to INR 2,720 per 100 kg Thursday, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices are weighed down by poor market sentiment, he said. "There is no change in demand or supply," he said. Demand for wheat remains limited while arrivals of the rabi crop stay low as farmers across the country are busy sowing kharif crops, he said.

 

Though arrivals in the market have declined, supply remains plentiful, Dinesh Mangal, another trader in Indore, said. "The government has good stocks, the mills have also stocked up on wheat. There is supply everywhere," he said. As such, sentiment has taken a hit, he added. The government's open-market sales of wheat are also likely to weigh on prices, he said. The government last week announced the reserve price for sale of wheat but is yet to declare the commencement dates.

 

Prices of wheat in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, were steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader. Prices are expected to fall in the near term once activity in the market resumes in full swing, he said. Market activity had been largely tepid in Vashi due to intense rainfall over and around Mumbai in the past few days, he said.

 

The price of MAIZE in Indore rose by INR 5 per 100 kg to INR 2,365 per 100 kg Thursday, Kochar said. Though demand and supply remain matched, prices have risen slightly on concern about lower production during the current kharif season, he said. As of Friday, the area sown with maize fell to 3.29 million hectares from 3.50 million hectares last year, data from the agriculture ministry showed. While maize acreage has taken a hit due to deficient rainfall in key producing areas, some farmers have also shifted to growing soybean, further hurting the coarse grain's acreage.

 

Prices of maize in Davanagere, Karnataka, were steady at INR 1,800-INR 2,050 per 100 kg, Shiva Kumar, a local trader, said. Arrivals were steady at 800 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said.

 

Prices of RICE varieties were steady in Vashi, Vora said. Prices of the 1409 and 1509 varieties of basmati rice were steady at INR 9,600-INR 9,700 per 100 kg and INR 8,200-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, respectively, he said. Prices of the 1121 variety of basmati rice were also steady at INR 10,000–INR 10,200 per 100 kg, he said. The movement of rice prices in the near term is expected to depend on the progress of kharif sowing and production, he said. Forecasts of below normal rainfall amid a strengthening El Nino weather pattern are expected to affect production this year, he said.  End
