MUMBAI – Prices of chana and masur were steady, while prices of tur showed mixed trends in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Tur rose in some markets amid a slight rise in need-based demand and concerns about the slow progress of kharif tur sowing, they said. Chana prices are likely to rise in August due to higher demand during the festival season, while masur prices could remain steady amid availability of imports and the government's stocks, they said.
CHANA prices in Indore, Mahdya Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,050-INR 6,100 per 100 kilograms, said Dinesh Mangal, a local trader. Prices were unchanged as demand and supply remained low and equally matched, he said. "Demand is mostly low, and if someone needs to purchase chana to fulfil immediate needs, the government's stocks are available," he said. The government has been offloading its chana stocks through central nodal agencies in many states during the past few weeks. Most of the stock is being sold at prices on par with market rates or slightly below them, he said.
Prices of chana are expected to rise by INR 100-INR 300 per 100 kg in August due to higher consumption during the festival season, Mangal said. However, the rise in prices could be limited if the government decides to keep selling its stocks during the festival period, or offload more of it to keep prices in control, he said.
Prices of chana in Delhi were steady at INR 5,925-INR 5,950 per 100 kg, traders said.
TUR prices in Solapur, Maharashtra, rose by INR 50 per 100 kg to INR 7,400-INR 8,000 per 100 kg Thursday, said Rahul Srinivas, a local trader. Seven to eight trucks with 20,000-25,000 kg of tur arrived in the market, he said. Prices have risen due to a slight rise in need-based demand from millers, he said. Prices were also supported by concerns about the tur acreage in Maharashtra in the ongoing kharif season, he said. Maharashtra is one of the top producers of tur in the country.
Deficient rainfall in key tur-producing regions in Maharashtra has kept the progress of tur sowing slow so far, he said. "People keep saying that Maharashtra received a lot of rainfall in the last few days, but the interior parts of the state, such as Vidarbha and Solapur, have not recorded anything like that," he said. Most of the intense showers were primarily over the Konkan belt in the state, leaving the interior largely dry. As of Friday, the area under tur across the country was down more than 41% on year at 1.24 million hectares, data from the agriculture department showed.
Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 8,150-INR 8,250 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.
MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 5,900-INR 5,950 per 100 kg, Mangal said. Prices have been fluctuating in a narrow range by INR 50 per 100 kg, depending on the demand from millers and traders, he said. While arrivals of the rabi crop are negligible, the availability of imports is keeping supply comfortable, he said. Imported masur is also cheaper than the domestic variety, and as such attracts more buyers, he said. The availability of stocks with the government is also expected to keep prices from rising anytime soon, he said.
Prices of the moti variety of masur in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,000-INR 6,300 per 100 kg, according to the association. End
