MUMBAI – The southwest monsoon advanced further over the remaining parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab on Thursday, thus covering the entire country a day after the normal date of Jun. 8, the India Meteorological Department said. Though the monsoon trough has covered the country, rainfall activity over many regions is likely to significantly reduce from Thursday and Friday due to the weakening of several weather systems across the country, the weather department said.

The intensity and spread of showers are expected to decline in most parts of central India, particularly in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat from Thursday, and over many parts of south peninsula India from Friday, the weather bureau said. Currently, all the active weather systems, which include a well-marked low pressure area, a western disturbance, and two upper air cyclonic circulations, lie over either northwest, east, or northest India, the bureau said. The offshore trough running from Gujarat to north Kerala has weakened, it said.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall with spells of extremely heavy showers are likely over parts of Uttarakhand till Friday, for which the weather department has issued a red alert. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.

Moderate to intense lightning is expected over parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad Saturday, and over east Uttar Pradesh on Sunday, the weather bureau said. Very heavy showers are likely over parts of Uttar Pradesh till Saturday. Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are forecast over several parts of northwest India till Wednesday, the bureau said.

Very heavy rainfall is expected over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya till Friday. Heavy showers with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over several parts of east India till Wednesday, while heavy rainfall is seen in most parts of northeast India till Wednesday, the weather department said. 

In central India, heavy showers are likely over parts of east Madhya Pradesh till Thursday. Scattered to widespread showers are expected to prevail over several parts of central India till Wednesday. Similar weather is expected over most parts of west India during the same duration, with heavy showers expected over parts of central Maharashtra on Friday, the department said. 

Strong surface winds are expected to continue over several parts of south peninsula India till Wednesday, the weather bureau said. Heavy showers are likely over most parts of the region till Friday, after which light to moderate rainfall is expected till Wednesday, the bureau said.  End
