NEW DELHI – India and Australia Thursday finalised the administrative arrangements necessary to enable the export of Australian uranium to India for peaceful purposes as the two countries agreed to strengthen cooperation in energy security. The outcome was announced after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's summit talks with his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese in Melbourne, Australia.

 

The two leaders reviewed progress across the full spectrum of bilateral cooperation, including trade and investment, critical minerals, clean energy, technology, defence and security, education, skills, mobility, science and innovation, culture, sports and people-to-people ties. They also exchanged views on regional and global developments and reaffirmed their commitment to a free, open, inclusive and prosperous Indo-Pacific.

 

"Australia and India reaffirm our commitment to working together to strengthen energy security, including maintaining a stable, secure and reliable supply of energy products, such as coal, diesel, other liquid fuels and natural gas," a joint statement issued after the meeting said.

 

"Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to accelerating energy transition and strengthening cooperation on low carbon fuels. In this context, Australia noted India's initiative of Global Biofuels Alliance," it added.

 

The two leaders also adopted the India-Australia Joint Declaration on Defence and Security Cooperation, which provides a framework for bilateral cooperation across defence, maritime domain awareness, counter-terrorism, combating trans-national organised crimes, critical minerals, defence industry partnerships, exchange of defence personnel, and regional security.

 

The defence partnership is meant to advance defence industrial collaboration and innovation ecosystems, promote information sharing, and enhance collaboration in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.  

 

The maritime security involves information sharing, capability building, operational coordination as well as pollution response and rescue operations. 

 

The pact underscores the growing strategic convergence between India and Australia, which are also partners in the four-nation Quadrilateral Security Dialogue.

 

The two countries' partnership in cyber and critical technologies will support national and regional security, and enhance collaboration in making supply chains more resilient.

 

The two sides also signed a memorandum of understanding to increase collaboration between the Indian Coast Guard and Maritime Border Command of Australia for coordinated coastal surveillance, joint maritime domain awareness, and maritime law enforcement. Besides, the two leaders also finalised several memoranda of understanding in areas education, skill development, and culture, among others.

 

Prime Minister Modi is on a three-day visit to Australia starting Wednesday. End
