MUMBAI – The area sown under kharif crops in Rajasthan progressed to 7.61 million hectares as of Monday, down nearly 22% from 9.74 million hectares sown in the corresponding period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Of the state's normal acreage for the period, which is 16.41 million hectares, more than 46% has been covered so far.

Maize acreage in the state was down at 531,086 hectares from 750,689 hectares in 2025, the report showed. The acreage under bajra fell to 1.92 million hectares from 3.30 million hectares a year ago, and paddy acreage declined to 68,676 hectares from 103,940 hectares last year.

The area sown under moong slipped to 1.29 million hectares from 1.35 million hectares a year ago, according to the report. The acreage under urad was down at 130,817 hectares from 188,379 hectares last year. The total area sown under all pulses fell to 1.82 million hectares from 2.0 million hectares a year ago.

The total area sown under all oilseeds so far was down at 1.38 million hectares from 1.56 million hectares covered in the previous year, the report showed. Groundnut acreage was up at 855,673 hectares from 736,648 hectares a year ago. The area sown under soybean fell to 490,400 hectares from 736,086 hectares a year ago. 

The acreage under cotton was 513,459 hectares, down from 604,315 hectares a year ago, while that under guar, another major kharif crop in the state, rose to 860,368 hectares from 781,781 hectares last year. The area sown under sugarcane was up at 4,072 hectares from 3,481 hectares a year ago.

Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season, which usually starts mid-June, and are harvested in October. During Jun. 1–Jul. 8, the state received 94.9 millimetres of rainfall, 13% above normal for the period, according to the India Meteorological Department. The monsoon advanced over the state on Jul. 2, seven days after the normal onset date of Jun. 25, according to the weather department. Active pre-monsoon conditions, along with the deluge of rainfall in the first few days of July, have made up for the shortfall seen in June. However, kharif sowing is yet to catch up with the rise in rainfall activity.  End
