NEW DELHI – US President Donald Trump Wednesday said he was not sure if any future deal with Iran will hold. His remarks came amid renewed hostilities in West Asia, with US forces striking multiple Iranian sites Tuesday night in response to Iran's attacks on a few commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

 

"If we make a deal with Iran, I'm not sure that will stick, because I found them to be very dishonourable people," he said in response to a media query in Ankara, on the sidelines of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization summit in Turkiye.

 

Trump said the Iranians were "behaving badly" and the US may restore the naval blockade of its seaports. He claimed the US forces hit 28 Iranian boats Tuesday night. "We are using same weapons we use against drug boats," he said. "We hit 28 boats last night."

 

Asked if the US forces will hit Iran again tonight, Trump said, "Whether we are going to attack, I wouldn't tell you. There isn't a thing they (the Iranians) can do about it. So the answer is 'probably'."

 

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said that on the orders of the president, US forces last night hit underground facilities storing missiles, coastal defence equipment, radar and surveillance sites, and "anything used to harass shipping in Hormuz". "We may hit again, and hit deeper, if the president permits," he said.

 

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Force has said it struck close to 85 locations in Bahrain and Kuwait in response to the US attacks, including the US 5th Fleet headquarters in Bahrain and the Ali Al Salem air base in Kuwait.

 

Trump said he had asked US forces to not attack oil facilities or cargo. "I said don't touch oil. We may take over cargo," he said, adding that so far the US has abstained from targeting crucial infrastructure like bridges, power generation plants, and desalination plants. "Maybe a big attack can knock out a lot of stuff," he said.

 

The president said the US may "de-nuclearlise" Iran without even a deal. "I don't even know if we are going to have a deal. We may just do it without a deal, because you know what, it's easier," he said.

 

The US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding on Jun. 17, which provided for the end of US and Israeli strikes, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and a 60-day ceasefire period to negotiate a final peace deal. Both sides are now accusing each other of violating the terms of the memorandum.  End
