MUMBAI – Global investors continued to withdraw from gold exchange-traded funds in June, with a net outflow of $8.9 billion for the month, the World Gold Council said in a report. All regions saw outflows with North America in the lead amid lower gold prices. In April, ETF flows were positive amid a rebound in gold investment activities.

In June, ETFs' total assets under management fell 13% on month to $526 billion, and holdings reduced by 2% to 4,047 tonnes.

In Asia, June marked the worst month on record with a net outflow of $2.3 billion. The June loss was mainly due to outflows from Chinese funds, as local investor risk appetite continued to improve amid equity market gains and weaker gold prices. Japanese funds also saw net outflows in June as the Bank of Japan raised interest rates.

India, however, "buckled the trend" and attracted net inflows of $388.5 million as local investors remained optimistic about gold prices and viewed the dip as an opportunity to enter.

In North America, funds lost $5.5 billion in June, bringing the region's Jan-Jun outflows to $7.7 billion and resulting in the weakest first half since 2013. Looking ahead, regional gold ETF flows could stabilise. Uncertain geopolitical situations may continue to support investor demand for portfolio protection and sustain interest in gold ETFs as a strategic safe-haven allocation, the WGC said.

European funds lost $818 million in June, trimming their H1 inflows to $3.2 billion. The European Central Bank hiked interest rates by 25 basis points, the first time since September 2023, citing inflation concerns amid the continuing US-Iran conflict, deterring investors from gold. "We have also observed continued outflows from FX-hedged products listed in the region, mainly in Switzerland, amid local currency depreciation against the dollar, adding to European fund losses in June," the council said.

"Despite June's loss, global gold ETF flows remained positive at US$8 billion in H1 (Jan-Jun)," the WGC said. "Asia dominated global inflows--the region's strongest H1 on record--while North America was the only region with losses. Europe saw healthy inflows."

Meanwhile, the daily average trading volume across all gold markets moderated in June, falling 13% on month to $373 billion per day. However, volumes remained 16?ove the 2025 average. Gold market trading volumes surged to record levels in Jan-Jun to an average of $488 billion per day. "Strength was broad-based, with every major segment posting its most active semi-annual averages on record," the council said. End
