MUMBAI – Prices of mustard and groundnut seed rose on Wednesday due to low arrivals and their good quality, traders said. However, soybean prices were unchanged from the previous day across key markets because of lack of fresh cues, they said.
MUSTARD seed prices in Kota, Rajasthan, were up by INR 200 at INR 7,801 per 100 kilograms because of low arrivals and better quality seed, local trader Mahesh Sameriya said. Mustard seed arrivals in Kota were at 8,000 bags, down from 10,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. "There was good quality seed today and arrivals decreased because farmers were busy with kharif sowing," Sameriya said.
"There is not much demand for mustard because soybean, sunflower, and other oils are cheaper, so this is the highest price mustard can go to," Sameriya said. He expects prices to fall by up to INR 500 per 100 kg if the government starts selling the oilseed. Dealers expect the government to start selling mustard soon to make space for procurement of kharif output from October.
SOYBEAN prices in Kota were steady from the previous day at INR 6,881 per 100 kg, Sameriya said. Arrivals were at about 8,000 bags (1 bag = 40 kg), down from 14,000 bags the previous day, he said. Even though arrivals fell, prices remained steady as there was buying at current levels, traders said. Soybean prices in Gondal in Gujarat were largely steady from the previous day at INR 6,000-INR 6,900 per 100 kg, local trader Ashok Virvani said.
GROUNDNUT prices in Gondal were at INR 5,700-INR 6,600 per 100 kg, up from INR 5,500-INR 6,300 per 100 kg from the previous day as arrivals fell, Virvani said. "Arrivals rose Tuesday as it stopped raining, but today (Wednesday) arrivals were back at normal, so were prices too," he said. Arrivals were at 3,230 kg Wednesday, down from 5,590 kg Tuesday, Virvani said.
