MUMBAI – The intensity of rainfall over parts of central India is expected to decline significantly from Thursday, the India Meteorological Department. The well-marked low pressure area over northwest Madhya Pradesh and adjoining Uttar Pradesh is expected to move northwestwards towards Uttar Pradesh, causing rain-causing winds to pull back from central India, the weather department said.

 

Very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of west Madhya Pradesh on Thursday and over the eastern parts of the state till Friday, the weather bureau said. Heavy showers are likely to continue over parts of Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh till Tuesday, the bureau said.

 

The monsoon trough remains in the same position as it was on Thursday. Conditions are favourable for the trough to advance further over the remaining parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab in the next two to three days, covering the entire country.

 

A seasonal trough runs from northwest Rajasthan to northeast Bangladesh, while an offshore trough stretches from south Gujarat to central Kerala. A trough also runs from the northeast Arabian Sea to Sikkim. 

 

The presence of these weather systems, along with the well-marked low pressure area, is likely to result in very heavy showers over sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, and Meghalaya on Thursday, and over Bihar and Arunachal Pradesh till Friday. Heavy rainfall is expected to persist over multiple parts of east and northeast India till Monday.

 

In west India, very heavy rainfall is likely over central Maharashtra on Thursday, while heavy rainfall is expected to continue over the region till Thursday. Heavy showers are also likely over the Gujarat region on Thursday, the weather bureau said. Light to moderate rainfall is expected to continue over several parts of west India till Tuesday, the bureau said.

 

Thundersqualls are expected over most parts of south peninsula India till Sunday, while strong surface winds are likely till Tuesday, the weather department said. Heavy rainfall is likely to continue over parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Kerala till Thursday, the department said.

 

Under the influence of a western disturbance acting as a trough and the seasonal trough running from northwest Rajasthan, very heavy showers are expected over parts of Uttarakhand on Friday, over east Rajasthan and west Uttar Pradesh till Thursday, and over east Uttar Pradesh from Friday to Sunday, the department said. Heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely over most parts of northwest India till Tuesday. Moderate to intense lightning is expected over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad during the weekend and over east Rajasthan till Thursday.  End
