MUMBAI – The area under kharif crops in Gujarat was 1.85 million hectares as of Monday, down nearly 57% from 4.31 million hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Of the state's normal acreage of 8.53 million hectares for the season, around 22% has been covered so far. 

 

Maize acreage in the state was down at 37,101 hectares from 80,689 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area under bajra was down sharply at 8,534 hectares from 52,295 hectares a year ago. The acreage of paddy rose to 30,435 hectares from 30,060 hectares.

 

The area under tur declined to 14,097 hectares from 48,717 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The area under moong was also down at 540 hectares from 12,080 hectares, and that under urad fell to 820 hectares from 11,085 hectares. The total area under all pulses so far was 15,498 hectares, down from 73,162 hectares a year ago. 

 

The total acreage of all oilseeds in the state was 666,029 hectares, down from 1.94 million hectares a year ago, the report showed. Groundnut acreage fell to 628,888 hectares from 1.76 million hectares. The area under soybean slipped to 35,200 hectares from 158,360 hectares.

 

Cotton acreage so far was down at 931,926 hectares from 1.71 million hectares a year ago, and the area under vegetables fell to 57,695 hectares from 103,854 hectares.

 

Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. During Jun. 1-Jul. 7, the state recorded 15?low normal rainfall at 140.5 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. The southwest monsoon hit Gujarat on Jun. 24, nine days after the normal onset date of Jun. 15.

 

The delay in onset of the monsoon, along with the weak presence of the monsoon trough once it had advanced over the state, resulted in deficient rainfall over Gujarat during the first month of the monsoon. Though the intensity and spread of rainfall picked up in the first few days of July, it was not enough to meet the shortfall in precipitation. Sowing of kharif crops was off to a strong start in Gujarat this year due to a boost in groundnut and cotton acreage amid availability of water from resources such as reservoirs and dams. However, kharif sowing in the state has been unable to keep up the pace because of continued lack of rainfall.  End
