MUMBAI – Prices of mustard seed were up Tuesday as the quality of seeds improved, traders said. However, soybean prices were unchanged from the previous day across key markets because of the lack of fresh cues, they said. Groundnut prices fell as arrivals rose after the intensity of rainfall reduced.
MUSTARD seed prices in Kota, Rajasthan, were at INR 7,601 per 100 kilograms, up from INR 7,500 per 100 kg Monday because of better quality seed, local trader Mahesh Sameriya said. Mustard seed arrivals in Kota were steady from the previous day at 10,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. "There was good quality seed today (Tuesday) and rains have also stopped here in Rajasthan. So prices were up," he said.
However, he expects prices to fall by up to INR 500 per 100 kg if the government starts selling the oilseed. "Government will have to start selling mustard soon as they have procured last year and for them to procure kharif output from October, they will have to clear stocks," Sameriya explained. "There is not much demand for mustard as prices of sunflower and soybean are currently lower than mustard prices," he added.
SOYBEAN prices at Kota were steady from the previous day at INR 6,880 per 100 kg, Sameriya said. Arrivals were at about 14,000 bags (1 bag = 40 kg), up slightly from the previous day as it had stopped raining, he said. Even though arrivals rose slightly, prices remained steady as there was buying at the current levels, traders said. Soybean prices in Gondal in Gujarat were also steady from the previous day at INR 6,100-INR 7,500 per 100 kg, local trader Ashok Virvani said.
GROUNDNUT prices in Gondal were at INR 5,500-INR 6,300 per 100 kg, down from INR 5,700-INR 6,500 per 100 kg the previous day as arrivals rose after it stopped raining, Virvani said. Arrivals rose to 5,590 kg from 3,500 kg Monday, he said.
