MUMBAI – After staying in positive territory till half an hour before close, headline stock indices slipped into the red and snapped a four-day winning streak on Tuesday. Though there were no negative triggers on the global front, a rise of nearly 2% in Brent Crude oil prices pulled the indices lower, after they were volatile on the day of expiry of Nifty 50 weekly options contracts. Oil prices rose nearly 2% from Monday's close after reports said a Qatari liquefied natural gas carrier was hit near the Strait of Hormuz. Both the indices ended with marginal losses.
"A tanker travelling off the coast of Oman in the Strait of Hormuz has caught fire after being struck by a projectile, according to the UK's military," Al Jazeera reported. The liquefied natural gas tanker came under attack after ignoring warnings, but Tehran did not directly claim the assault, Al Jazeera reported, citing Iranian television.
As per a CNBC report, "attacks in the waterway, which typically handles around 20% of the world's oil traffic, reaffirm the fragility of the US and Iran's interim peace agreement, as they negotiate a permanent end to their war." At 1451 IST, the Septmber futures contract of Brent Crude was nearly 2% higher at $73.27 a barrel.
On Tuesday, the Nifty 50 settled 0.1% lower at 24398.70, down 31.65 points from the previous close. The BSE Sensex ended the session 0.1% lower at 78180.72, down 104.35 points. The 50-stock index is over 600 points short of its pre-war level of over 25000 points. Among Nifty 50 constituents, 24 traded higher during the session. India VIX, the market's fear gauge, ended almost 2% lower at 11.6475 points, signalling a drop in nervousness among investors.
The broader market also showed a negative performance, with the Nifty Mid-cap 50 being the sole gainer. All other mid-cap and small-cap indices ended 0.3–0.7% lower. Among sectoral indices, most settled in negative territory. The Nifty IT turned out to be the highest gainer among sectoral indices, up over 2%. On the other hand, the Nifty Realty snapped a five-day winning run and ended as the key loser among its sectoral peers.
Trent ended as the biggest drag on the 50-stock index, down over 12%. The stock declined after the company released its business update for the June quarter. The Tata Group-owned retail company's sales for the quarter rose 19% on year to INR 56.66 billion, below the estimate of INR 58 billion-INR 58.60 billion, according to three brokerages. The stock ended as the key laggard on the Nifty 200 as well as the Nifty 500 indices.
Adani Group companies Adani Enterprises and Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone were the next big losers in the 50-stock index, down 1.6–3.1%. A fall of around 1?ch in Nifty 50 heavyweights ICICI Bank and Reliance Industries also dragged down the index.
Kalyan Jewellers India was the second-biggest drag in both the Nifty 200 and Nifty 500 indices, down nearly 7%. The stock fell despite the company reporting a 38% on-year rise in revenue for its June quarter, while its international sales were up 35%.
Cochin Shipyard settled with a 4% loss on the Nifty 200 index, after the government launched an offer for sale for up to 5.04% equity in the company.
Realty stocks also shed more during the session and the Nifty Realty ended down nearly 2%, with most stocks trading lower. Brigade Enterprises was the major loser in the sectoral index, down 4%. Shares of DLF ended over 3% lower. Oberoi Realty and Anant Raj ended over 2% lower each.
HCL Technologies was the biggest gainer in the 50-stock index, and ended 3% higher. Tech Mahindra, Infosys, and Tata Consultancy Services ended 1.8–2.9% higher. Shares of information technology companies rose ahead of their June quarter earnings after analysts said negative factors were already priced in. In the Nifty 200 index, Mphasis, LTM, and Persistent Systems were up 2.9–3.6%.
Consumer durables and fast-moving consumer goods stocks were the other major gainers, with the Nifty Consumer Durables and Nifty FMCG being the other gainers among sectoral indices, apart from the Nifty IT. Titan Co. gained 2.7% in the Nifty 50, while Hindustan Unilever and ITC ended marginally higher. Shares of Titan rose after the company released its June quarter business update. Its consumer business revenue for the quarter rose 41% on year, and its jewellery business in India reported revenue growth of 39% in Apr-Jun.
Shares of Info Edge ended over 13% higher and were the biggest gainers in both the Nifty 200 and Nifty 500 indices. The stock rose after the company's standalone billings for the June quarter rose 14% on year. The company's standalone billings for the quarter were at INR 7.37 billion, up from INR 6.44 billion in the year-ago quarter.
