MUMBAI – The southwest monsoon advanced further over the remaining parts of Gujarat and some more parts of Rajasthan and Haryana Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department said. The monsoon trough is expected to cover the rest of Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab over the next two to three days, thereby covering the entire country, the weather department said.

 

The depression over east Madhya Pradesh weakened into a well-marked low pressure area in the early hours of Tuesday. It is likely to move across Madhya Pradesh and the adjoining areas of southwest Uttar Pradesh and weaken further over the next 24 hours, the bureau said. A seasonal trough runs from southwest Rajasthan to Bangladesh, while an offshore trough from south Gujarat to central Kerala. Another trough runs from the Arabian Sea to Bangladesh, across the well-marked low pressure area.

 

Under the combined influence of these weather systems, heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy showers are likely over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim Wednesday, the IMD said, for which it has issued a red alert. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.

 

These weather systems are also likely to cause very heavy rains over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim Thursday and Friday, over Bihar Friday, Arunachal Pradesh till Friday, and Assam and Meghalaya till Thursday, the weather bureau said. Heavy showers are likely to continue over several parts of east and northeast India till Monday.

 

The monsoon is likely to be in an active phase over central India for the next three days, the bureau said. Very heavy rains are expected over parts of Madhya Pradesh till Thursday, while heavy rainfall is expected to persist over parts of the state till Sunday, and over Vidarbha in Maharashtra Wednesday.

 

In west India, very heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Konkan, Goa, Gujarat, and central Maharashtra Wednesday, the weather department said. Heavy showers are likely over the same regions Thursday, and over Saurashtra and Kutch till Wednesday. Thundersqualls are expected over Gujarat till Thursday.

 

Very heavy showers are also likely over parts of coastal and south interior Karnataka Wednesday. Thundersqualls are expected over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Wednesday and Thursday, and over Karnataka and Telangana till Wednesday. Heavy rainfall and strong surface winds are expected to prevail over most parts of south peninsula India till Monday, the department said.

 

A western disturbance acting as a trough lies to the northwest of the country. This weather system, along with an upper air cyclonic circulation over southwest Rajasthan and a seasonal trough running from the same region, is expected to cause very heavy showers over parts of east Uttar Pradesh during the weekend and over east Rajasthan Wednesday and Thursday. Heavy showers with thunderstorms and lightning are likely to persist over multiple parts of northwest India till Monday, the IMD said.  End
