MUMBAI – Mumbai has recorded intense showers in the past few days, with the Santacruz weather station crossing the monthly normal mark of 919.9 millimetres of rainfall in the first six days of July. In Delhi, the monsoon has been less severe, though thundershowers and strong winds have prevailed in the last few days. The intensity and spread of rainfall over Mumbai is likely to decrease from Thursday, while drier weather is expected to make a comeback in Delhi from Saturday, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said. 

In Mumbai, heavy to very heavy showers are likely to continue till Wednesday, after which conditions are likely to ease from Thursday, the weather agency said. The depression over Jharkhand and interior Odisha is likely to move northwards towards southwest Madhya Pradesh, accentuating the monsoon current over the Konkan region. This, along with the north-south offshore trough running from south Gujarat to coastal Karnataka, and the monsoon system over Madhya Pradesh, is expected to keep up the wet spell over Mumbai till Wednesday. The system over Madhya Pradesh is likely to weaken in two to three days, reducing the intensity of showers over the city.

Heavy showers have been largely absent in Delhi even after the monsoon advanced over the city on Thursday, the weather agency said. Most parts of Delhi have received light to moderate rainfall so far, accompanied by strong winds. Persistent clouds, moderate winds, and sporadic showers have lowered the day temperatures to around 35 degrees Celsius in the capital city.

The main trigger for heavy monsoon showers over Delhi is the seasonal east-west trough that runs from Rajasthan to Gangetic West Bengal. This trough is currently controlled by the depression over the Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh region. The trough is running in proximity to south Delhi. However, there is a western disturbance across the mountains, pulling this trough northward. Under the combined influence of the depression and the western disturbance, the trough will oscillate north-south, leading to scattered rainfall over Delhi till Friday.

As the east-west trough shifts northwards, dry weather conditions are likely to return during the weekend, the weather agency said.  End
