MUMBAI – Farmers in Rajasthan have sown kharif crops across 6.31 million hectares as of Thursday, down nearly 25% from 8.37 million hectares covered in the corresponding period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The normal acreage for the season is 16.41 million hectares, of which more than 38% has been covered so far.

 

The acreage under paddy was down to 46,715 hectares from 78,875 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area sown under maize fell to 252,114 hectares from 600,006 hectares last year, and that of bajra also declined to 1.67 million hectares from 2.69 million hectares a year ago.

 

Moong acreage in the state slipped to 1.12 million hectares from 1.25 million hectares last year, according to the report. The area sown under urad also fell to 43,360 hectares from 143,809 hectares a year ago. The total area sown under all pulses so far was 1.54 million hectares, up from 1.76 million hectares last year.

 

The total acreage under all oilseeds in the state was 1.13 million hectares, down from 1.35 million hectares sown in the previous year, the report showed. Groundnut acreage rose to 815,104 hectares from 690,377 hectares a year ago, while that of soybean was down at 299,765 hectares from 596,141 hectares last year.

 

The acreage under cotton fell to 492,855 hectares from 601,813 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area sown under sugarcane was up at 3,902 hectares from 3,455 hectares last year, and that of guar, another major kharif crop in the state, rose to 800,778 hectares from 709,627 hectares last year.

 

Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the Southwest monsoon season, which usually starts around mid-June, and are harvested in October. During Jun. 1–Jul. 6, the state received 77.4 millimetres of rainfall, 1?low normal for the period, according to the India Meteorological Department. The monsoon advanced over the state on Jul. 2, seven days after the normal onset date of Jun. 25, according to the weather department. Active pre-monsoon conditions have made up for the shortfall in monsoon showers in the state so far.  End
