Champat Rai out, Krishna Mohan named acting general secy of Ram temple trust

NEW DELHI – Krishna Mohan, a permanent trustee of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, was Monday appointed interim general secretary of the trust following the formal acceptance of Champat Rai's resignation. The decision was taken at a three-hour meeting of the trust held at the Ram Janmabhoomi complex in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh. Seven of the trust's nine members, including its chairman, Mahant Nritya Gopal Das, attended the meeting. Rai and member Anil Mishra did not show up, according to media reports. Mishra's resignation was also accepted.
The meeting, which had been scheduled to take place on Saturday, was advanced to Monday amid rising public anger against Rai over the alleged embezzlement of donations and offerings made at the temple. Rai stepped down citing moral responsibility amid the ongoing controversy.
After the meeting, Krishna Mohan told reporters he would be working as general secretary until a permanent appointment is made to the post. "I have been entrusted with the responsibility of discharging the duties of general secretary in an acting capacity until a new general secretary is appointed," he said.
He added that the "prevailing atmosphere has somewhat tarnished the image" of the trust. "We will take all necessary steps to dispel this negative perception and rebuild trust within the community," Mohan, a retired Indian Forest Service officer, said. "Anyone found guilty in this matter, we will insist and remain firm in our insistence that they receive appropriate punishment." End
