NEW DELHI – Samajwadi Party President and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav Monday alleged that a power struggle between the central and state governments is influencing the probe into the Ram temple donations and offerings embezzlement case. "The 'double engines' are not running, they are colliding with each other," Yadav remarked at a press conference in Lucknow, taking a dig at the Bharatiya Janata Party's oft-repeated "double engine government" slogan.

 

"Before the Delhi bloc could even think of a plan to wriggle out of this, Lucknow took the matter in its own hands," he said, raising a question over why a central agency is not probing the case instead of a team of local officers serving under the state government. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has formed a three-member Special Investigation Team to investigate the matter.

 

"What is SIT? If the Enforcement Directorate, Central Bureau of Investigation, or the Income Tax Department were roped in, who would have held the reins of the investigation? In the SIT investigation, who is in control?" Yadav said.

 

The Samajwadi Party leader said the "gang thriving on stealing donations and gifts" is avoiding scrutiny as it fears a public backlash. "They have been so blinded by the treasure that they no longer care about people's faith and sentiments," he said. "Devotees of Ram and the Sanatanis across the world, seers of Ayodhya, the high court, the Lok Sabha speaker, and the backward class people should take cognisance of what is happening here."

 

Late Sunday evening, BJP Lok Sabha member Nishikant Dubey retweeted a social media post that claimed that one of the suspects, Tinnu Yadav, was in regular telephonic contact with Akhilesh Yadav. According to claims attributed to police investigation of mobile call records, Tinnu Yadav allegedly spoke to the former chief minister once or twice almost every day before his arrest.

 

In a social media post later, Akhilesh Yadav warned of legal action against those "propagating lies" on social media. He also asked Dubey to delete his "untruthful" post "in the next 10 minutes", failing which a police complaint would be lodged against him. "An opposition MP has the same privileges as a ruling party MP," Yadav said. Dubey, however, had not deleted his post even three hours later.  End
