India June crude steel output up 4% on year to 14.1 mln tonnes

NEW DELHI – India's crude steel production grew nearly 4% on year to 14.1 million tonnes in June, the Ministry of Steel said Monday. Finished steel production grew 6% on year to 13.8 million tonnes, whereas hot steel production declined 0.3% on year to 7.9 million tonnes during the month. The demand for finished steel grew 7% on year to 14.2 million tonnes in June.
During Apr-Jun, domestic crude steel production grew 3% on year to 42.1 million tonnes. The production of hot metal grew 1% on year to 23.5 million tonnes, while finished steel output rose nearly 6% on year to 41 million tonnes during the quarter. The demand for finished steel grew 8% on year to 41.6 million tonnes during the quarter.
Import of finished steel jumped nearly 58% on year to 695,700 tonnes in June, while exports rose 38% to 616,200 tonnes. During the quarter, finished steel imports grew 49% on year to 2.1 million tonnes, and exports rose 31% to 1.6 million tonnes.
On a month-on-month basis, domestic steel prices declined across all major product categories in June. The prices of TMT bars declined by around 5% on a month-on-month basis to INR 60,068 per tonne. The prices of hot-rolled coil declined 0.5% on-month to INR 70,108 per tonne, and that of cold-rolled coil was down 1% on-month to INR 77,053 per tonne. The price of galvanised plain sheet declined nearly 3% on-month to INR 86,505 per tonne.
On a year-on-year basis, domestic steel prices grew across all major categories in June. TMT or rebar prices increased by about 4% on year, and those of hot-rolled coil grew by 11% on year. The prices of cold-rolled coil were up 11% on year, and those of galvanised plain sheet grew by nearly 16% on year in June. End
