Traffic at major Indian ports up 6.1% on year in Apr-Jun

AHMEDABAD – Freight traffic handled by major Indian ports rose 6.1% on year to 233.64 million tonnes in Apr-Jun, the Indian Ports Association said. The growth is driven by sharp increases in finished fertiliser and other miscellaneous cargo.
Crude oil and petroleum products cargoes increased by 2.1% on year to 66.85 million tonnes during the period, while liquids other than crude and petroleum products declined 9.1% on year to 7.44 million tonnes.
Imports of finished fertilisers rose 33.3% on year to 2.07 million tonnes in Apr-Jun, while other miscellaneous cargo rose 26.6% to 33.22 million tonnes. The volume of iron ore pellets rose 1.8% to 13.97 million tonnes.
The volume of thermal coal rose 2.6% on year to 35.58 million tonnes and coking coal increased 2.3% to 16.82 million tonnes in the June quarter.
Among ports, Deendayal Port at Kandla handled the highest traffic at 42.76 million tonnes, followed by Paradip Port at 39.67 million tonnes, and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority at 27.84 million tonnes.
