MUMBAI – Prices of chana and moong were steady, while prices of tur fell in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Tur prices fell due to a slight rise in arrivals as demand remained low, they said. Chana prices are expected to rise in August due to higher demand during the festival season, and moong prices could also rise due to worries about lower acreage in the ongoing kharif season, they said.

CHANA prices in Madhya Pradesh were steady at INR 6,050-INR 6,100 per 100 kilograms, said Kailash Kakani, a local trader. Prices are steady as demand and arrivals are both low and equally matched, he said. "Those who want to buy chana are currently purchasing it from the government," he said. Central nodal agencies such as the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd. have been offloading chana in various states in the past few weeks, making up for the decline in arrivals of the rabi crop in markets, he said. Demand remains weak as seasonal consumption of chana dal, or processed dal, and besan, or chana flour, is yet to pick up pace, he said.

Prices are likely to remain largely range-bound in July, Kakani said. "We are likely to see demand rise only in August because of the festival season. But even then, the rise in prices will depend on whether the government is still selling its stocks, and how much it is offloading," he said.

Prices of chana in Delhi were steady at INR 5,950-INR 5,975 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

TUR prices in Solapur, Maharashtra, fell by INR 100 per 100 kg to INR 7,400-INR 7,950 per 100 kg Monday, said Mukesh Sanklecha, a local trader. Around 14–15 trucks carrying 20,000-25,000 kg each arrived in the market, he said. Prices fell due to a slight rise in arrivals amid low demand, he said. Farmers are offloading their leftover stocks in fear of a further fall in prices, he said. Kharif sowing has also begun in Maharashtra, prompting farmers to empty out their stocks before they begin sowing activities in full swing, he said.

The market is monitoring the progress of kharif tur sowing for further cues, they said. The intensity and spread of rainfall has increased across Maharashtra in the past few days, which may support sowing further, he said. However, forecasts of below-normal rainfall in the second half of July could deter an increase in acreage, he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, fell by INR 50 per 100 kg to INR 8,150-INR 8,250 per 100 kg Monday, according to the association.

MOONG prices in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 6,400-INR 6,800 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices were unchanged amid lack of new cues, Sanklecha said. Arrivals of the summer moong crop have stopped, while demand remains largely low. Prices could be supported in the near term due to lower moong acreage in the ongoing kharif season, he said. The moong sowing window is expected to end soon, which could keep acreage lower on year, he said.  End
