MUMBAI – Prices of wheat and maize showed mixed trends, while that of rice were unchanged in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Wheat prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were supported by the slowdown in arrivals and the reserve price set by the government for the open-market sales of wheat, they said. Maize prices in Indore fell due to lower demand, while rice prices are likely to depend on the progress of kharif sowing in the near term, they said.

Prices of WHEAT in Indore rose by INR 10 per 100 kilograms to INR 2,730 per 100 kg Monday, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices were supported by lower arrivals as most farmers were busy sowing kharif crops, he said. Prices were also supported by the reserve prices set for wheat for the open-market sales, he said. The government last week announced the reserve prices for wheat and rice to be sold via the open-market sales scheme. Wheat will be sold at INR 2,600 per 1900 kg to private parties through e-auctions, to state governments without participating in e-auctions, and to community kitchens. Wheat will be sold at INR 2,585 per 100 kg under the "Bharat" brand.

Prices of wheat in Kota, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 2,475-INR 2,500 per 100 kg, said Ravi Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals fell by 5,000 bags to 10,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. Prices were unchanged amid a slowdown in arrivals and limited demand, he said. Arrivals of wheat have declined as most farmers are busy sowing kharif crops, he said. "Sowing started a few days ago in Rajasthan in hope that the state will begin receiving rainfall soon, so arrivals are lower," he said.

Prices are likely to fall in the near term as the government is expected to begin the open-market sales of wheat, Mehta said. The open-market sales are likely to increase supply, weighing down on prices of wheat available in spot markets, he said. However, the reserve price set by the government is likely to keep prices from slipping sharply below INR 2,700 per 100 kg, he said.

Prices of wheat in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, were steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader. Prices were unchanged amid tepid market activity. Mumbai and its suburbs have seen intense rains over the last few days, reducing footfall in the market, he said. 

MAIZE prices in Indore fell by INR 40 per 100 kg to INR 2,360 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices fell due to low demand, he said. "Prices have risen too much, most are not encouraged to buy maize at INR 2,400 per 100 kg or above," he said. Prices had risen in the past few weeks due to worries about lower production in the ongoing kharif season following the delay in monsoon and deficient rainfall across the country, he said. 

Prices of maize in Davanagere, Karnataka, were steady at INR 1,800-INR 2,050 per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals were steady at 800 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said.

Prices of RICE varieties were steady in Vashi, Vora said. Prices of the 1409 and 1509 varieties of basmati rice were steady at INR 9,600-INR 9,700 per 100 kg and INR 8,200-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, respectively, he said. Prices of the 1121 variety of basmati rice were also steady at INR 10,000–INR 10,200 per 100 kg, he said. The market is monitoring the progress of kharif rice sowing for further cues, he said. "Parts of Maharashtra were rain deficient in the past month and in the last few days suddenly we have recorded intense showers. So, farmers are hoping rainfall in July increases so that sowing can progress smoothly," he said.  End
