MUMBAI – The monsoon is likely to be in an active phase over the central parts of the country in the next three days due to the formation of a depression over the eastern parts of India, the India Meteorological Department said. The low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a depression and moved westwards over the country's mainland Sunday. Currently it lies over the coastal areas of Odisha and West Bengal and is likely to move towards Jharkhand, north Chhattisgarh, and east Madhya Pradesh in the next 24 hours, the weather department said.

 

The monsoon trough remains where it was Thursday, the weather department said. Conditions are favourable for it to advance further over more parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan and over the remaining parts of Haryana and Punjab in the next three days, the department said.

 

A seasonal trough runs from southwest Rajasthan to the east-central Bay of Bengal while a shear zone runs from the east to the west coast of the country. An offshore trough runs from south Gujarat to north Kerala. Under the influence of these weather systems, along with the depression, heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy showers are expected over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim Wednesday, over Konkan and Gujarat till Tuesday, over central Maharashtra till Wednesday, and over coastal Karnataka till Tuesday, the bureau said. 

 

A red alert has been issued for Gujarat till Tuesday, for central Maharashtra till Wednesday, and for sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim Wednesday. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.

 

Very heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Madhya Pradesh till Wednesday, over Vidarbha till Tuesday, and over Chhattisgarh Tuesday, the weather bureau said. Heavy rainfall is likely to continue over these regions till Friday, it said.

 

In east India, very heavy rainfall is expected over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim Tuesday and Thursday, over Bihar Tuesday and Wednesday, over Arunachal Pradesh from Tuesday to Thursday, and over Assam and Meghalaya Wednesday. Heavy rainfall is likely over most parts of east and northeast India till Sunday, the weather department said. Strong surface winds are likely to prevail over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands till Sunday, the department said.

 

Very heavy rainfall is expected over Gujarat, Konkan, and Goa Wednesday, while heavy rainfall is expected to persist over several parts of west India till Thursday, the weather bureau said. 

 

In south peninsular India, very heavy showers are expected over parts of Karnataka till Wednesday, the weather department said. Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely to continue over multiple parts of south peninsular India till Sunday, the department said. Thundersqualls are expected over parts of Karnataka and Telangana till Tuesday, the department said. Strong surface winds are expected over parts of Andhra Pradesh, coastal and north interior Karnataka, and Telangana till Sunday.

 

The presence of a western disturbance acting as a trough is likely to cause very heavy showers over parts of Himachal Pradesh till Tuesday, east Uttar Pradesh Friday and Saturday, and over east Rajasthan till Thursday. Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over most parts of northwest India till Sunday.

 

The conditions at sea in the northwest Bay of Bengal as well as along and off the coasts of north Odisha and West Bengal are "very likely" to be rough till Tuesday, the weather bureau said.  End
