MUMBAI – Prices of mustard, groundnut, and soybean were steady in key markets across the country, traders said. They expect prices of soybean to fall in the near-term by INR 200 to INR 400 per 100 kilogram as arrivals are expected to rise, supported by the selling of the seed by stockists and the government, traders said.
SOYBEAN prices at Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh remained steady around INR 3,225-INR 7,450 per 100 kg, said Narendra Porwal, a local trader. Arrivals were at around 2,800 bags (1 bag = 40 kg), down from 3,100 bags, he said. "Arrivals fell as farmers were busy sowing kharif crops," the traders said.
In Rajasthan's Kota, soybean prices were unchanged at INR 6,870, Mahesh Sameriya, a local trader, said. Arrivals totalled around 10,000 bags, down from 12,000 bags the previous day, he said. Even though arrivals fell slightly, prices remained steady as there was buying at the current levels, traders said.
Sameriya said the government and stockists will be offloading the old stock of soybean seed in the domestic market, which will lead to slight downside in soybean prices. However, in the medium-term, prices are likely to rise due to firm demand during the festive season in August and arrivals at local markets decline after stockists sell the older stocks. "We will see a slight fall in prices, but once sowing (of soybean) picks up, arrivals will fall, and we can expect prices to rise because of demand during festival season," Porwal said.
Porwal expects soybean sowing to be higher than last year as some maize farmers shifted to soybean during this kharif season amid attractive prices of the oilseed. "One out of two farmers who shifted to maize last year are shifting back to soybean this time because of good prices. So sowing is expected to be 15% higher (on a yearly basis)," Porwal said. According to the government, soybean acreage as of Thursday was down 65% on year at 692,000 hectares.
MUSTARD seed prices were steady in Kota from the previous day at INR 7,650 per 100 kg, local trader Sameriya said. Mustard seed arrivals in Kota were a tad up at 12,000 bags from 11,000 bags on the previous day. Sameriya expects mustard prices to fall by INR 400 per 100 kg due to low demand for the seed.
GROUNDNUT prices in Ratlam were steady at INR 3,350-INR 8,050 per 100 kg, Porwal said. Arrivals were down around by 300 bags from the previous day at 2,500 bags (1 bag = 30 kg), he added.
