MUMBAI – Future contracts of coriander on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange recovered from the previous day's losses and resumed their uptrend Friday on bargain buying. Turmeric and jeera prices fell in what observers described as a short-term correction.

At 1648 IST, the most active August CORIANDER contract was trading at INR 15,516 per 100 kilograms, up 1.2% from the previous close. After falling on Thursday, the contract resumed the uptrend seen earlier in the week. On Thursday, the contract hit an intraday all-time high of INR 15,700 per 100 kg before declining on profit booking.

Arrivals across major spot markets fell by 35% on-week to 1,845 tonnes, compared with 2,822 tonnes during the corresponding period last year, indicating dwindling supply, traders said. Coriander prices are expected to remain steady to firm, supported by healthy industrial demand and optimism over export enquiries, they said.

"Coriander continues to outperform due to a sharp decline in available stocks and lower arrivals in major mandis. While warehouse stocks have increased as traders deliver produce to exchange-approved warehouses, physical market supplies remain limited. A relatively weaker rupee is also improving India's export competitiveness, which could support demand from overseas buyers," an analyst said.

Over the next few days, coriander prices on NCDEX are likely to move in the INR 13,850–INR 15,660 per 100 kg range, market sources said.

TURMERIC prices declined under pressure of increased arrivals, as this is the peak harvesting season. Farmers have accelerated stock liquidation, resulting in higher daily arrivals across major markets, outpacing immediate buying demand, Kedia Stocks and Commodities Research said in a note. "Additional pressure came from

reports of rhizome rot and quality deterioration in some arrivals, forcing sellers to accept lower prices," it said.

However, the overall supply situation remains supportive, the analyst quoted above said. "Turmeric is trading near a 23-week high as lower carry-forward stocks and weather-related crop damage have strengthened the market. Stocks available from last season have dropped sharply, while unseasonal rains in parts of Maharashtra have affected the standing crop," he said.

The most-traded August turmeric contract on NCDEX was at INR 17,498 per 100 kg, down 0.3% from the previous day's close. Next week, it is seen trading in the INR 16,300-INR 17,600 per 100 kg range.

JEERA prices on NCDEX fell further Friday on tightening supply and profit-booking, market participants said. The peak post-harvesting season is over, and domestic demand has come down. "Farmers and stockists have adopted a cautious selling strategy, releasing stocks gradually rather than aggressively, helping maintain firmness in spot availability."

On the other hand, demand trends remain mixed. Domestic spice processors continue to follow a hand-to-mouth procurement strategy rather than building large inventories, limiting immediate buying momentum, Kedia Stocks and Commodities Research said in the note.

The most active July contract was trading at INR 20,445 per 100 kg, down 0.2% from its previous close. It is likely to trade in the INR 19,700-INR 20,800 per 100 kg in the next few days, said analysts.
