MUMBAI – Prices of pulses in key spot markets across the country were mixed, traders said. Chana prices rose in some markets amid a marginal rise in demand and low arrivals, they said. Tur prices rose due to a decline in acreage and forecasts of below-normal monsoon rainfall weighing on the production outlook, they said. Masur prices are expected to fall in the near term due to reports of a rise in imports, they said.
CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 25 per 100 kilograms to INR 6,100-INR 6,125 per 100 kg Friday, said Raja Jain, a local trader. Prices have risen amid a slight rise in demand while arrivals remain low, he said. Demand for chana is likely to improve further in the near term as the monsoon has set in over most parts of India, he said. Consumption of chana products typically increases once the monsoon begins in full swing and temperatures decline.
Prices are likely to rise in the near term, Jain said. "After 8–10 days, demand for chana will begin increasing properly due to monsoon consumption, and then demand for the upcoming festival season will also rise," he said. Arrivals are likely to remain low in the near term, as farmers are busy sowing kharif crops, he said. "Now, arrivals will only increase after kharif harvest is done, when the farmers need to sell their stocks before chana sowing begins in the rabi season," he said.
Prices of chana in Delhi were unchanged at INR 5,950-INR 5,975 per 100 kg, traders said.
TUR prices in Solapur, Maharashtra, rose by INR 100 per 100 kg to INR 7,400-INR 8,050 per 100 kg Friday, said Rahul Srinivas, a local trader. Around 9–10 trucks carrying 20,000-25,000 kg of tur each arrived in the market, he said. Prices have increased due to concerns about tur sowing, he said. Tur sowing is off to a slow start this year due to the delay in monsoon onset over most parts of the country, he said. With forecasts suggesting that rainfall is likely to remain below-normal in July, fears of lower acreage and production have risen, he said.
"Traders, millers, all buyers have begun stocking up on tur because they are worried that production will be hit this year," Srinivas said. Tur sowing in Maharashtra is yet to begin in full swing as many parts of the state remain deficient in rainfall, he said. Maharashtra is among the top tur producing states in the country. As of Monday, the area under tur in Maharashtra was 82,894 hectares, down from 643,810 hectares a year ago, according to a report by the state agriculture department.
Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 50 per 100 kg to INR 8,350-INR 8,450 per 100 kg Friday, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.
MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 5,900-INR 5,950 per 100 kg, Jain said. Prices are expected to decline in the near term due to reports of a rise in imports, he said. Imports from countries such as Australia and Canada are likely to rise in the near term, weighing on domestic masur prices, he said. The imported masur is also expected to be priced cheaper than the domestic variety, he said. "Demand is likely to stay low, so higher imports will just weigh on domestic prices," he said.
Prices of the moti variety of masur in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,800-INR 6,250 per 100 kg, according to the association. End
