NEW DELHI – The FAO All Rice Price Index averaged 108.2 points in June, up 3.2% from a month ago and 2.6% from a year ago. Prices of rice followed mixed trend across various varieties last month, according to data from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.

At 108.2 points, the FAO All Rice Price Index stood at its highest level since January 2025, according to a report. The growth in the index was mainly led by the Indica quotations, which grew 4.6% on month to 110.1 in June.

The Glutinous rice price index rose 1% on month in June, although firmness in this segment was largely confined to Thailand and curbed by generally subdued buying interest, the report said. While the Japonica rice price index fell 0.3% to 96.6 in June. Aromatic rice price index fell 0.8% to 105.5 last month, reflecting a downturn in demand for fragrant varieties.

Export prices of Indica rice were firm in all the major Asian origins in June. Thailand and Pakistan saw the most pronounced gains as whole-grain quotations rose due to increased exports to the Philippines as the private sector buyers in the country shifted import sources other than Vietnam, the report said.

In Thailand, there was additional upward pressure on prices due to sustained production concerns and strong exports to Malaysia, the report said. The price of 100% Thai parboiled rice rose to $506.7 per tonne in June from $449.6 per tonne in May. The price of Thailand's A1 Super rice variety rose to $426.7 a tonne in June from $409.8 per tonne in May while that of Thailand's 25% broken variety rose to $479 per tonne from $427.2.

India's Pusa Basmati was steady for third consecutive month in June at $1,050 per tonne. However, the average price of 25% broken non-basmati rice exported from India rose to $329.6 per tonne in June from $326.5 in May and that of 5% broken non-basmati rice rose to $347.1 per tonne from $341.3 in May, the release showed. The price of 5% parboiled rice from India was up to $338.6 per tonne compared with $330.6 per tonne in May.

The price of Vietnam's 25% broken rice rose to $384.5 a tonne in June from $377.9 per tonne in May. While tight supplies supported Vietnam rice prices, exports to African destinations drove upswings in India. "In both cases, however, price increases tended to be moderate since they were capped by slow trading activities in Vietnam and by ample availabilities in India," the report said. 

Pakistan's 5% broken rice rose to $393.5 a tonne last month from $350.7 in May, while basmati rice fell to $1,140 per tonne in June from $1,152.8 in May. "In Pakistan, quotations also drew support from efforts to complete shipments before the 30 June expiry of tax and levy remissions on exports approved in January," the report said. End
