MUMBAI – The southwest monsoon has covered entire Madhya Pradesh and some more parts of Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Haryana on Friday, the India Meteorological Department said. Conditions are favourable for the monsoon trough to advance over some more parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan, and the remaining parts of Haryana and Punjab in the next four to five days, the weather department said. Currently, the monsoon trough passes through Jamnagar in Gujarat, Udaipur, Ajmer, and Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan, Hissar in Haryana, and Bhatinda in Punjab, the department said. 

 

A low pressure area lies over the northwest Bay of Bengal, which is likely to intensify over the next two days, the weather bureau said. A seasonal trough runs from northwest Rajasthan to the centre of this low pressure area, while a shear zone stretches from the eastern coast of India to the western coast. An offshore trough also runs from Maharashtra to Karnataka.

 

Under the combined influence of these weather systems, heavy to very heavy rainfall with spells of extremely heavy showers are expected over parts of west Madhya Pradesh till Saturday, over Odisha till Saturday, over Konkan, central Maharashtra, and south Gujarat till Monday, and over Saurashtra and Kutch till Saturday. The department has issued a red alert for all these regions for the specific periods. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.

 

The low pressure area is likely to keep monsoon in an active phase over central India for the next four to five days, the weather bureau said. Very heavy rainfall is expected over parts of west Madhya Pradesh from Sunday to Thursday, east Madhya Pradesh till Monday, and Vidarbha till Sunday, the bureau said. Heavy rainfall is expected to continue over most parts of central India till Thursday.

 

Very heavy rainfall is seen over parts of Gangetic West Bengal on Sunday, while heavy showers are likely to persist in most parts of east India till Thursday, the weather department said. Moderate to intense lightning is expected over Jharkhand till Saturday, the department said.

 

In west India, very heavy showers are expected over parts of Konkan, Goa, and central Maharashtra on Tuesday, over south Gujarat on Sunday and Monday, and over Saurashtra and Kutch on Tuesday and Wednesday. Heavy showers are expected over multiple parts of west India till Thursday.

 

Very heavy showers are expected over parts of coastal Karnataka till Tuesday, south interior Karnataka from Sunday to Tuesday, and over Telangana during the weekend, the weather bureau said. Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely over several parts of south peninsula India till Thursday, the bureau said.

 

In northeast India, heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely over most parts of northeast India till Tuesday, the weather department said.

 

The presence of a western disturbance, the monsoon trough, and an upper-air cyclonic circulation over and near northwest India is expected to cause heavy showers over many parts of the region till Thursday, the weather bureau said. Very heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Himachal Pradesh on Monday and Tuesday and east Rajasthan till Tuesday, the bureau said.  End
