MUMBAI – The area covered under kharif crops in Andhra Pradesh reached 470,000 hectares as of Wednesday, up nearly 81% from 260,000 hectares sown in the corresponding period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Of the normal acreage for the season, which is 3.08 million hectares, more than 15% has been covered so far.

 

Paddy acreage in the state was up at 144,700 hectares from 100,000 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The acreage under maize was up at 26,500 hectares from 22,000 hectares last year, while that of bajra fell to 4,400 hectares from 6,000 hectares a year ago.

 

Tur acreage so far rose to 47,100 hectares from 14,000 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The area sown under urad fell to 6,900 hectares from 7,000 hectares, while that under moong was up at 1,100 hectares from 1,000 hectares a year ago. The total acreage under all pulses was 55,100 hectares, up from 21,000 hectares sown a year ago.

 

The total area sown under all oilseeds so far during the season climbed to 41,800 hectares from 32,000 hectares sown in the previous year, the report showed. Groundnut acreage was up at 30,100 hectares from 24,000 hectares last year. The acreage under soybean also rose to 4,200 hectares from 1,000 hectares.

 

Cotton acreage rose to 186,300 hectares from 72,000 hectares last year, and that of sugarcane was up at 8,000 hectares from 5,000 hectares a year ago.

 

Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the Southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. During Jun. 1–Jul. 2, Andhra Pradesh recorded 92.2 millimetres of rainfall, 8?low the normal for the period, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. The monsoon trough advanced over Andhra Pradesh on Jun. 6, and covered the entire state by Jun. 12. The absence of a weather system over the eastern parts of the southern peninsula, along with the weakness of the monsoon trough over the region has kept rainfall below-normal over Andhra Pradesh.

 

As of Friday, water levels in reservoirs across Andhra Pradesh were at 39.7% of their live storage capacity, down from 52% a year ago, data from the state's water resources department showed.  End
