Monsoon to cover India during Jul 9-15, rainfall to weaken by then, says IMD

MUMBAI – The southwest monsoon is likely to cover the entire country between Jul. 9 and Jul. 15, the India Meteorological Department said in its extended range forecast for the next two weeks. The monsoon trough is expected to advance over more parts of Gujarat, the remaining parts of Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Punjab, and some more parts of Rajasthan during the first week of the forecast period, and cover the entire country during the second week. The southwest monsoon typically covers India completely by Jul. 8.
During the first week of the forecast period, rainfall is likely to remain normal to above normal over most parts of the country except northeast India, where it is expected to be below normal, the weather department said. The spread and intensity of rainfall is expected to decline during the second week of the forecast, as precipitation is likely to be near normal across the country, the department said.
No heatwaves are expected during the entire forecast period, the weather bureau said. Hot and humid weather is likely to prevail over the plains of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam till Monday, the bureau said.
In the week ended Wednesday, the country received 38.4 millimetres of rainfall, 28% below normal for the period, the bureau said. All four homogenous regions saw deficient rainfall during the week. Northwest India recorded 43% below normal rain at 17.7 millimetres, while in east and northeast India, rainfall was 35% below normal at 61.8 millimetres. Rainfall in south peninsula India was 22% below normal at 31.3 millimetres, and in central India, it was 18% below normal at 50.4 millimetres. End
