MUMBAI – Tur prices in key spot markets across India rose Thursday while chana and urad prices were steady, traders said. Tur prices rose on worries about low production in the current kharif season due to below-normal rainfall, dealers said.

 

TUR prices in Akola in Maharashtra rose INR 150 per 100 kilograms to INR 8,150 per 100 kg, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. "Tur prices rose tracking prices of lemon (tur) variety, which rose (INR) 450 (per 100 kg) in 48 hours," Kedia said. Market participants were selling at high prices due to the anticipated low output in the ongoing kharif season because of slow sowing amid below normal rainfall, he said.

 

According to forecasts, below-normal rainfall is also likely to persist in July, which has raised fears of lower tur acreage, traders said. In Maharashtra, the largest producer of the legume, the area under tur as of Monday was 82,894 hectares, down from 643,810 hectares a year ago.

After recording 40?low-normal rainfall in June, India is likely to receive below-normal rainfall in July as well, mainly due to persisting El Nino conditions. The average rainfall during July is expected to be around 94% of the long-period average of 280.4 mm, the India Meteorological Department has said.

 

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 50 per 100 kg to INR 8,300-INR 8,400 per 100 kg Thursday, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

 

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,050-INR 6,100 per 100 kg, according to the association. However, in the medium term, traders expect chana prices to rise as demand for the commodity is expected to rise in August when the festival season begins, traders said. Chana prices in Delhi were steady at INR 5,925 per 100 kg, traders said.

 

URAD prices in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 7,400-INR 8,400 per 100 kg, traders said. Strengthening of El Nino conditions in the next few months clouds the outlook for urad production this year, the association said in its weekly report Monday.  End
