NEW DELHI – Ex-mill prices of sugar were largely steady Thursday following a sharp rise Wednesday in key markets across Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, traders said. Sugar prices had risen sharply in Maharashtra amid fears of below-normal rainfall in July that could impact the ongoing sugarcane crop and sugar production later.
Good rainfall is required to improve sucrose content or sugar recovery from the sugarcane crop. Typically, mills start producing sugar from harvested cane around October. The India Meteorological Department has projected a 'below-normal' rainfall in the country in July as well, since the El Nio conditions persist.
Bombay Sugar Merchants Association Secretary Mukesh Kuvadia said sugar prices were largely unchanged from Wednesday. He said prices are likely to remain range-bound in the coming week with an upward bias, supported by concerns about output and lower July sales limit.
Mills in Maharashtra are mandated to sell only 718,170 tonnes of sugar by July end, down nearly 8% from June. For Uttar Pradesh, the sales limit was raised 0.5% on month to 823,485 tonnes for July, according to a notification Tuesday. The government fixes the maximum quantity of sugar available for sale every month to support prices and help mills clear the arrears of sugarcane farmers.
The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Flat at INR 4,200-INR 4,290 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 4,200-INR 4,300 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 4,130-INR 4,160 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
--Flat at INR 4,232-INR 4,290 per 100 kg in Mumbai
At 1740 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was up 0.1% at 15.01 cents per pound. Sugar prices rose amid concerns about lower global sugar production in key regions, including India and Brazil, due to the El Nio conditions. End
