MUMBAI – Futures contracts of coriander fell Thursday on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange as investors booked profit after prices rose to record high, analysts and traders said. Prices of turmeric rose as buying improved at current levels while those of jeera fell due to poor export demand, they said.

The most active August contract of CORIANDER was down Thursday as investors booked profit after prices rose to an all-time high of INR 15,700 per 100 kilograms intraday. The July contract was not active Thursday after rising to a record high of INR 15,780 per 100 kg Tuesday.

In the key spot market of Ramganj in Rajasthan, prices were down INR 100 at INR 15,200 per 100 kg as stockists sold the stock to book profit, local trader Satyanarayan Gupta said. Arrivals in the Ramganj market were largely steady from the previous day at 3,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said.

"The recent correction is mainly due to resistance at higher levels, but the overall trend remains supported by lower mandi arrivals and expectations of tighter supplies this season," Kotak Securities said in a report. "Strong buying from stockists and spice processors on price dips is also providing support."

The most active August contract of coriander ended at INR 15,348 per 100 kgdown 1.7% from Wednesday. The key resistance is INR 15,600, while immediate support is seen at INR 15,300, analysts said. A breakout above resistance could lift prices towards INR 15,900 and INR 16,200, whereas a fall below support may lead to INR 15,000 and INR 14,700.

The most active August contract of TURMERIC ended at INR 17,586 per 100 kg, up 0.4%, supported by improved buying, SMC Investments and Advisors said in a note. "While arrivals continue to remain substantially higher than the corresponding period last year, expectations of stronger export demand, coupled with steady procurement by stockists and domestic processors, are likely to absorb the increased supplies and provide continued support to prices in the near term." The futures contract is expected to hover between INR 17,110 per 100 kg and INR 17,910.

The most active July contract of JEERA ended at INR 20,460 per 100 kg, down 0.2% over Wednesday. "Good availability of farmer-held stocks and slower export buying are limiting fresh gains," Kotak Securities said. If prices sustain below INR 20,675, it could drag prices towards INR 20,480 and INR 20,300, while a sustained move above INR 20,900 may trigger fresh buying towards INR 21,210 and INR 21,575.
