NEW DELHI –  The southwest monsoon advanced further over more parts of Gujarat and the remaining parts of Uttar Pradesh and Delhi on Thursday, the India Meteorological Department said. The monsoon trough has also covered most parts of Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Punjab, as well as some parts of Rajasthan. 

 

Currently, the monsoon trough passes through Neemuch in Madhya Pradesh, Tonk in Rajasthan, Bhiwani in Haryana, and Bhatinda in Punjab. In Gujarat, the trough remains over the same areas as on Wednesday – Porbandar, Vallabh, and Vidyanagar.

 

IMD said conditions are favourable for the monsoon trough to further advance into more parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan in the next two to three days. The trough is also seen covering the remaining parts of Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Punjab during the same period. 

 

IMD said 'heavy rainfall' was recorded in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, west Uttar Pradesh, and west Madhya Pradesh, among others, during the past 24 hours till 0830 IST Thursday. 

 

Meanwhile, 'very heavy rainfall' was recorded over the eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Maharashtra, and Odisha during the same hours. 'Extremely heavy rainfall' was recorded only over the Konkan region, including Mumbai, it added. 

 

"A low-pressure area has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Odisha-West Bengal coasts. As a result, monsoon is likely to be in an active phase over central parts of the country during next 5-6 days," IMD said. Central India includes west Madhya Pradesh, east Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh.

 

IMD has issued a red alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall with spells of extremely heavy rain over entire Gujarat, including Saurashtra and Kutch, till Saturday and parts of Gujarat neighbouring Konkan and Goa till Sunday. A red alert has also been issued for west Madhya Pradesh and Odisha for Friday and Saturday, and for central Maharashtra from Friday to Sunday. 

In south India, very heavy rainfall is likely over Kerala and Mahe on Friday, coastal Karnataka till Wednesday, and parts of Karnataka from Sunday to Wednesday. Meanwhile, hot and humid weather with warm night conditions is likely in the plains of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam till Monday, IMD said.  End
