NEW DELHI – India and Japan have prepared an economic security roadmap under which the two countries will focus on strengthening supply chain resilience in strategic areas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday, after a meeting with visiting Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi here.

 

"In today's uncertain times, both countries understand the importance of economic security and energy security," Modi said at a joint press briefing with Takaichi. "We have prepared a joint roadmap for economic security, under which we will strengthen supply chain resilience in strategic areas such as semiconductor, quantum technology, and advanced materials," he said. 

 

Modi said India had taken various steps to improve the flow of capital and investment into the country, and Japanese enterprises too could take advantage of that. "We target 10 trillion Japanese yen investment and doubling the number of Japanese companies in India in the next 10 years," the prime minister said.

 

Modi said Japan has been an important partner in India's growth story, and in the coming years, technology would become the strongest pillar of partnership between the two nations. He said that a free, prosperous and rule-based Indo-Pacific is the "shared priority" of the two nations.

 

"Under our first co-development project, we will jointly develop defence technologies that will strengthen regional peace, maritime security, and rules-based order," Modi said.

 

Japan will help India set up 1,000 biogas and organic fertiliser plants, Modi said. "This will boost our GOBARdhan scheme, will bring sustainability, prosperity, and more livelihoods in rural areas," he added.  More

 

The two countries also discussed energy resilience to tackle situations like an 'oil shock', as seen during the recent war in West Asia, and agreed to extend cooperation in battery, green hydrogen, and nuclear energy.

 

"Today, we also prepared the India-Japan next generation mobility partnership framework. Through this, we will repeat our automotive sector success story in other sectors such as ship-building, aviation, and logistics," the prime minister said. He added that the two countries were working to create more opportunities for talent mobility, skilling, and technical internships, besides strengthening cooperation in research, education, and start-ups.

 

Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi said Indian and Japanese companies have signed 120 cooperation documents, which will help deepen economic ties between the two countries. She also mentioned the bilateral cooperative biogas initiative as an important step.

 

Takaichi is on a three-day state visit to India starting Wednesday. Prime Minister Modi had visited Tokyo in August last year to take part in the 15th India-Japan annual summit.  End
