MUMBAI – The area under kharif crops in Telangana was 3.33 million acres (1 acre = 0.4 hectares) as of Wednesday, down nearly 16% from 3.95 million acres a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The normal acreage for the season is 13.24 million acres, of which more than 25% has been covered so far.

 

Paddy acreage in the season so far was down at 110,126 acres from 182,156 acres a year ago, the report showed. The area under maize fell to 102,676 acres from 222,859 acres.

 

The acreage of tur stood at 143,242 acres, down from 239,501 acres a year ago, according to the report. Moong acreage fell to 20,680 acres from 24,423 acres, while the area under urad declined to 5,789 acres from 8,491 acres. The total area under all pulses was down at 170,082 acres from 272,464 acres a year ago.

 

The total acreage of all oilseeds in the state fell to 165,720 acres from 200,961 acres a year ago, the report showed. The area under soybean was down at 164,709 acres from 200,799 acres a year ago, while that under groundnut rose to 764 acres from 67 acres.

 

The area under cotton so far was 2.68 million acres, down from 2.85 million acres a year ago, according to the report. Sugarcane acreage was at 22,162 acres, against none a year ago. 

 

The southwest monsoon hit Telangana on Jun. 8, 15 days after the normal onset date, and covered the entire state by Jun. 23. The state has recorded deficient rainfall during the third week of June, which has resulted in lower than expected acreage of various crops. "In response, the Agriculture Department has taken concrete measures to ensure timely availability of all types of seeds at the disposal of the farmers to mitigate the impact and support continued sowing activities," the report said.  

 

During Jun. 1-Jul. 1, Telangana recorded 99.6 millimetres of rainfall, 28?low the normal for the period, the data showed. The water level in reservoirs across Telangana was 338.60 thousand million cubic metres as of Wednesday, compared with 458.15 thousand million cubic metres a year ago, according to the report.  End
