Monsoon to hit Delhi before weekend, rains to intensify Sun-Tue, says Skymet

MUMBAI – The southwest monsoon is likely to advance over Delhi before the weekend, nearly a week after the normal onset date of Jun. 27, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said. The onset of monsoon is likely to increase the spread and intensity of rainfall over the city, with the heaviest showers likely from Sunday to Tuesday, the weather agency said.
The seasonal trough extending from Punjab to north Bay of Bengal is in proximity to Delhi. A western disturbance will also begin affecting northwest India from Thursday. Under the combined influence of these weather systems, scattered rainfall is likely to continue over Delhi and its suburbs. With the onset of the monsoon likely in one to two days, the intensity and spread of these showers will increase from Sunday to Tuesday, the weather agency said.
The presence of persistent cloud cover and bursts of rainfall is likely to lower the day temperature in Delhi, the agency said. The maximum temperature during daytime is likely to remain under 35 degrees Celsius for the rest of the week. Most of the rainfall activity over the city is likely during the evening and night, it said.
In June, Delhi recorded only 32.7 millimetres of rainfall, against the normal of 80.66 millimetres, the weather agency said. July and August are typically the wettest months of the monsoon for Delhi, with July clocking in an average monthly rainfall of 195.8 millimetres. The rainfall recorded at the Safdarjung weather station in July for the past eight years has consistently exceeded this average. In July 2025, the station recorded 259.3 millimetres of rain. End
