MUMBAI – The acreage under soybean is expected to rise on year during the ongoing kharif season as farmers are switching back from maize due to attractive prices, according to the Soybean Processors Association of India.
According to the government, soybean acreage as of Thursday was down 65% on year at 692,000 hectares. According to the association, the acreage under the oilseed was 2.89 million hectares as of Tuesday. "There is a 7 to 10 days' lag in reporting of government data, which is the reason for the official figures being lower than our estimates," the association said in a note.
Delayed monsoon over key growing states such as Maharashtra and Rajasthan led to late sowing as compared to last year. According to the association, soybean acreage was 845,000 hectares and 350,000 hectares in Maharashtra and Rajasthan, respectively. "The sowing progress in Maharashtra is slow due to lack of sufficient soil moisture, but we hope it would catch up in the next two weeks," the association said.
However, with sufficient rainfall in most of Madhya Pradesh and the sowing progressing at a fast pace, the association expects the sowing to be completed by Jul. 15 in the state. As of Tuesday, the area under soybean in Madhya Pradesh was 1.56 million hectares, as per data by the association.
"Over production will, of course depend on distribution of rainfall during the next three months," the association said. On Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department said India is likely to have below-normal rainfall in July as well, mainly due to persisting El Nino conditions. The average rainfall during July is expected to be around 94% of the long-period average of 280.4 mm. End
