NEW DELHI – The government has cut the base import price of most edible oils in the range of $30-$42 per tonne, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs said in a notification Tuesday. The revised rates have come into effect Wednesday.
The base import prices of edible oils were last revised on Jun. 15 and took effect the next day. Typically, base import prices of edible oils are revised every fortnight, and these are used to calculate the duty on the commodities brought into the country.
India is the largest importer of edible oils. Palm oil accounts for the bulk of the country's imports, mostly sourced from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. The base import price of crude palm oil has been cut by $42 per tonne and that of refined, bleached, and deodorised palm oil has been raised by $41 per tonne. The government has lowered the base import price of both crude palmolein oil and refined, bleached, and deodorised palmolein oil by $30 per tonne each. It has raised the price of crude soyoil by $12 per tonne.
